The free Battle Royale mode Warzone from Call of Duty Modern Warfare has slowly but surely crept onto each of our private computers in our editorial office. After a few hours of play, we summarized our experiences.
Game Principle
At first glance, Warzone may feel like a perfectly normal battle royale game. The more you engage with this game mode, the clearer it becomes that developer Infinity Ward and Raven Software have come up with some small but nice features that make the battle royal game much more enjoyable.
The ping system from Apex Legends has been adopted in its way. You can use the ALT key to mark all sorts of objects for your team. For example, there are several shop stations across the map where you can buy back new weapons, killstreaks, or dead team members.
Speaking of which, when a player dies, it's not over for them right away. Namely, after death, you will be sent to the Gulag, where you will face off against another player who has recently been killed. The winner gets a second chance and the loser gets to watch until revived by his teammates.
There is single, team, and loot mode. Bounty is all about collecting the most money with your team. The team with the biggest bank account wins. Once a team has raised $1 million, they go into three-minute overtime.
During this overtime, the money multiplier is cranked up to x1.5. So a comeback right at the end of a round is not entirely impossible. The leading team is always marked on the map for all other players to see.
Map
Verdansk isn't the biggest battle royale map we've ever seen. The five districts are divided into a total of 45 zones. The objects that can be pinged are located within these zones. There are 335 of them in total.
So that you don't have to cover the entire map on foot, there are vehicles here and there on the side of the road that you can use to get around faster. We just say Roadkill.
Once you perform a high enough jump, you can deploy your parachute again. A skyscraper quickly becomes a springboard.
Characters And Weapons
At the beginning of a round, there is only one normal pistol. However, there are already a few weapons scattered around the map that you can use to fight your first firefight. In the course of a round, however, you will get even more and above all better equipment from other players and from the shops on the map.
Weapons, just like in almost every other battle royale game, have rarities that determine their effectiveness in combat.
With an equipment drop, which you can buy in the shop, you have the opportunity to change your entire loadout right away. This is also the only way you can get class perks. That should be your first priority every round.
Game Flow
The Warzone game mode is cross-platform. Console players and PC players gamble together in one lobby.
While the animation when entering the gulag is quite nice to look at, always a skipper as you want to save yourself time if possible and get back to your team as soon as possible.
However, the animations and weapon handling are convincing across the board. If you've enjoyed playing Modern Warfare before for those two points, you'll enjoy Warzone mode as well.
Battle Pass
Of course, a Battle Pass should not be missing. There are 20 free rewards that you always get as soon as you have unlocked the corresponding level. These include, for example, the new basic weapons.
Paid leg rewards are purely cosmetic and do not give you any real gameplay advantage. You look damn cool though. At €10, the Battle Pass is priced relatively cheaply.
You even get characters for that. In Season 2, you get the community favorite Ghost as an operator when you buy it.
