Being successful means, among other things, making the right decisions in life – both professionally and financially – and being lucky enough. Many people try to make money fast, but success doesn't come overnight and the combination of luck and right decisions alone is not enough.

So what is the missing building block? Numerous studies over the years have looked at what actually separates successful people from others. In short, successful people have a very high level of discipline that helps them develop simple yet effective habits. But what are these habits?

In this post, we've summarized some of the habits of successful people - maybe you'll learn a few from them. Incidentally, it takes an average of 66 days to form a routine or habit, so patience is key.

1. Getting up early

In a study, 50% of self-made millionaires said they wake up three hours before the start of the workday. A healthy sleep routine plays an important role in our physical and mental health. According to Corley's study, 89% of all self-made millionaires sleep 7-8 hours a night. Successful people still manage to use the time before work for personal projects such as sports, planning or other activities. This helps to get things done that are important outside of work and gives a sense of control over everyday life.

2. Read a lot

88% of all self-made millionaires said they read at least 30 minutes a day - sounds doable, right? Incidentally, most books are read with the purpose of personal development and so they are often specialist books, biographies or self-help books. But books that are read for entertainment can also help us in our professional lives. Major US investor Warren Buffett said reading is a "pioneer habit" he's developed.

3. Time is money

There is one resource in everyone's life that is much more precious and valuable than money - namely time. Invested money can come back, but invested time doesn't. Is there time wasting in successful people? none. Almost everyone can learn a lesson from this, considering how many pointless hours we spend on Netflix or social networks. You don't have to use every second to make money, but you could certainly have used this time more wisely.

4. Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are

A well known and often true saying. Successful people surround themselves with other successful people. Of course, this is not meant to be a call to find other friends if there are no high-flyers in your circle of friends. However, if you are ambitious and highly motivated, you should keep an eye out for networking opportunities - in Corona times also online via LinkedIn. Like-minded people help to gain knowledge and exchange creative ideas - inspiration and networking never hurt.

5. Sport as an important part

76% of all self-made millionaires surveyed said they invest at least 30 minutes a day in physical activity. Weight training, jogging, cycling or other sports. Explaining the benefits of physical activity is beyond the scope of this post, but in short, exercise helps keep your body and mind in good shape and improves your performance. British multi-billionaire and Virgin founder Richard Branson has said he "does twice as much" after exercising.

6. Secure passive income

Another important part of the life of successful people is financial security. This includes having a healthy relationship with money (i.e. not living above your own standard), finding a suitable form of investment and securing passive income. The average person does not have an apartment that can be easily rented out. However, there are other ways to secure a passive income - for example with a smart investment such as shares, online marketing or many other options. Find out which form of passive income could suit your skills.

Conclusion

Habits play an important role in our lives. They are often the basis for health, wealth and both positive and negative emotions. We are our greatest enemies, but we are also masters of ourselves and therefore the only ones who can change ourselves. Healthy habits not only help to be more productive at work, but especially to get the most out of each day - that too is a form of success.
